461 years Semarang

Friday May 2, 2008 was the 461st Anniversary of Semarang City. The name of the city, Semarang, may have been originated from the acronym of the javanese words “asem” (tamarind) and “arang” (rare). The city is a melting pot of Javanese, Chinese, Indian and Arabian cultures.
Tugu Muda and Lawang Sewu are the most famous Semarang’s landmarks. They are located on westward of Simpang Lima, the downtown. During the celebration of the city’s anniversary, many events are usually held here, such as exhibition, traditional Batik fashion show, cultural performance, and many more.

The Great Zheng He (Cheng Ho)

Location : Sam Po Kong Temple, Semarang
This is the sculpture of Admiral Zheng He (Cheng Ho). He was a Chinese mariner of Hui ethnic, descent, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral. Zheng He led seven expeditions to what the Chinese called “the Western Ocean” (Indian Ocean).
Morning Light

Location : Bukit Sari, Semarang
A Beautiful Morning Light (taken from Bukit Kusuma). I also named this place “Tower Hills” because we can see about 17 transmission towers here. This is the best place on Semarang to build transmission towers. Because all around Semarang city can be covered from here. Most of Radio, TV broadcasting and Telecommunication Companies are located in this area.
